OUR STORY

The Azaiki Public Library, a beacon of education and culture, is the brainchild of Prof. Steve Azaiki, former Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government. Recognizing the importance of knowledge in societal transformation, the idea for the library took root in 1999.

With the support of Azaiki himself, his family, and the directors of his foundation, the dream became a reality. On May 19, 2015, the Azaiki Public Library was officially established and commissioned. The momentous event was graced by dignitaries including the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, represented by Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, and then Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson, represented by his Chief of Staff, Talford Ongolo.

This library, designed to provide free access to knowledge, offers a serene and resourceful environment equipped with modern facilities. It stands as a testament to the vision of making education, culture, and innovation accessible to the public, fostering lifelong learning and intellectual growth.

Since its establishment, the Azaiki Public Library has grown into a hub for research, culture, and community engagement, preserving its mission to serve as a center for knowledge and empowerment for all.

AZAIKI FOUNDATION

The Azaiki Foundation stands as a beacon of hope and progress in Nigeria, particularly within the tumultuous landscape of the Niger Delta region. Established in 2012 by a visionary who understood the undercurrents of educational disparities, the foundation is deeply rooted in the belief that education is the cornerstone of societal development. Growing up in the littoral region of the Old Rivers State, now known as Bayelsa State, the founder experienced firsthand the challenges that hindered access to quality education. This personal journey ignited a passion to foster growth and cultivate opportunities within the community.
Since its inception, the Azaiki Foundation has dramatically transformed the lives of many. It has provided bursaries and scholarships to over 1,000 tertiary students, both locally and internationally. This support helps brighten the futures of promising individuals, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams and return to their communities equipped with knowledge and skills. The foundation also recognizes the significance of empowering women within commerce, having supported more than 2,000 women in various trading ventures.
A significant thread woven into the foundation’s mission is the provision of medical assistance, directly impacting over 300 individuals from rural areas. Access to healthcare remains a challenge in many communities, and the foundation’s efforts to alleviate these burdens showcase its commitment to holistic development. One of its crowning achievements is the establishment of the first privately owned public library in the Niger Delta, located in Yenagoa, the heart of Bayelsa State. This library serves as a vital resource for students and lifelong learners, helping foster a culture of reading and education amidst limited resources.
In 2015, the foundation expanded its horizons further by creating the Institute of Science and Technology in Yenagoa, aimed at nurturing skill sets tailored towards scientific advancement and technological innovation. The Azaiki Museum of African Arts and the Oil Museum, also established that year, celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region while educating visitors about historical contexts and technological milestones within the oil industry.

The foundation's commitment to education does not stop at higher learning. It has played an integral role in building primary school blocks across several communities, emphasizing the importance of foundational education for young learners. One remarkable project is the Yenebebeli Primary School, erected over three decades ago, illustrating the foundation's long-standing dedication to educational infrastructure.

Recognizing the essential need for skills acquisition, the Azaiki Foundation also led initiatives to establish a Skills Acquisition Center in Polaku, Bayelsa State. This center aims to equip youth and women with practical skills that enhance their employability and foster entrepreneurial endeavors. By providing training and resources, the foundation nurtures a generation capable of driving economic growth. Moreover, the Azaiki Foundation actively contributes to policy formulation at both state and federal levels through its significant investment in the National Think Tank. This organization serves as a catalyst for change, advising policymakers on critical issues affecting communities across Nigeria. Additionally, the foundation funds the International Society of Comparative Education, Science and Technology (ISCEST), further underscoring its commitment to fostering educational research and comparative studies that address local and global challenges.

In essence, the Azaiki Foundation embodies a holistic approach to community development by intertwining education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. Its initiatives not only uplift individuals but also create a ripple effect that benefits entire communities within Nigeria. As it continues its mission, the foundation serves as a model for others, demonstrating that with dedication and vision, sustainable change is not just possible but can thrive in even the most challenging environments.

Through the Azaiki Foundation, the dream of a better, more educated society is not merely an aspiration; it is a reality in progress, driven by compassion, commitment, and a shared vision for a brighter future. In line with the vision, mission and core values of the Foundation, the Foundation founded and established subsidiary organizations which function semi-autonomously and contribute to the overall goals of the Foundation, especially on education and research, cultural heritage preservation, innovation in science and technology, community service, leadership and advocacy.
